Crazy for Crawfish

$

0

Crawfish (also known as crayfish, crawdads, mudbugs or yabbies) are freshwater crustaceans resembling small lobsters. As of 2005, the state of Louisiana supplies 95% of the crayfish harvested in the US.

Lucky for us at Anitox, CEO Rick Phillips carried 80 lbs (36kg) of live crawfish from his home in Louisiana to the Lawrenceville office (only about 50 got loose in his car, but you’ll have to ask him about that story, and how the local police got involved!)

On Wednesday, March 8th Rick set up his gear in the Lawrenceville parking lot and got to cooking. A crawfish boil is a fairly simple process with a delicious outcome. While the potatoes and corn are boiled in a large pot along with garlic, onions, lemons and lots of cajun seasoning, the live crawfish get a good cleaning in a salt water bath. They get added to the vegetables in the boiling water and cook until they are bright red. Cajun tradition is to pull the crawfish and vegetables out of the water and pour everything out onto a paper-covered table. However for our Anitox crawfish boil, we used serving pans and plates.

It was an absolutely beautiful Spring day to enjoy our outdoor feast, and everyone had a great time digging in.

A special thank you to Rick for putting together this special event for our team.

March 2017 saw another successful Midwest Poultry Federation Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota for the North America team. Ron Nietfeld, Jim Brewer and Nick Braden were able to meet with many customers, leads and industry influencers during the conference. On Wednesday the team hosted our signature whiskey tasting, inviting potential customers to enjoy a sampling of various whiskeys and learn about how Anitox can solve their pathogen control and milling challenges.

Great job to the team on another great show!

Industry demands regulators rely on sound science

EU FlagAnitox requests EU Commission to take latest worker safety information into account and keep formaldehyde products, the most effective salmonella treatment available for feed, available in Europe.

Formaldehyde has been used in EU member states for many years as a direct feed additive (classed as a feed preservative) under the Biocide Directive.  With changes in the regulatory framework, this use of formaldehyde was moved to a feed additive classification and a decision at the EU level has been stalled as member state representatives debate this issue.

As recently published in EU Food Law, Agra-Europe, and Animal Pharm, the EU Commission announced at the December meeting of the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (PAFF) that instead of continuing to propose authorization of formaldehyde to control salmonella in poultry and pig feed as it has for over 2 years, the Commission is now considering to propose a denial despite the EFSA Opinion supporting the safe use as a feed additive. This move will undermine years of progress in salmonella control in the EU and has caused great concern in the supply chain for salmonella-free poultry and pig products.

Of primary concern to dissenting member states, were questions of worker safety and what occupational levels of exposure are deemed safe.  This has now been clarified with the final Scientific Opinion on Occupational Exposure Limits (SCOEL) for formaldehyde.  This rigorous review of occupational uses of formaldehyde in all EU sectors  has concluded with the recommendation of an 8-hour TWA exposure limit of 0.3 ppm and a Short Term Exposure Limit (STEL)  of 0.6 ppm.

Anitox fully supports these limitations in the EU along with the requirement for closed application systems and has asked the Commission to draft a 10 year authorization for formaldehyde use to control salmonella in feed with these limits in place.

VIV Asia Recap

Widely regarded as the ‘flagship’ trade show for the feed and food industries in Asia, VIV Asia is held bi-annually in Bangkok. With an airy, modern looking, purpose-built booth in an excellent position next to one of the main thoroughfares, the Asia-Pacific team focused its promotional and educational activities primarily on Maxi-Mil (the team’s biggest selling range) and also Termin-8. The team was supported at the event by Ruth Jewkes and Roger Mann.

With many countries in the region now starting to look very seriously at moving away from antibiotic growth promoters (AGP’s) the team had a number of discussions with customers about what role Termin-8 could play in a ‘post-AGP’ world. The rest of the feed additive industry’s desire to promote their products as alternatives to AGP’s was evident throughout the event with almost every other booth referring in some way to ‘reduced antibiotic use’. Productive meetings were also held (off the booth) with Aviagen and Cobb.

In order to help collect contact details from attendees to the booth the AP team trialed a scanning App for the first time and recorded over 101 visitors to the booth just bye scanning their visitor passes’ QR codes. The team also ran a well-attended 40 Year Anniversary Champagne and chocolates ‘Happy Hour’ on the first two days to encourage visitors to the stand.

According to the VIV organisers and fellow exhibitors this was the biggest and busiest VIV Asia ever. For the AP who were rushed off their feet at times, it certainly felt like a successful event.

With the expansion of our business activities in China and the resultant increased need for logistic, administrative and regulatory support in China, the Asia-Pacific team have recently realigned their resources and shared out the various country and product responsibilities for customer service between Bonnie Bai (based in Beijing) and Salina Chong (based in Kuala Lumpur). Wherever possible each country is ‘managed’ by one person to avoid confusion and ensure that our distributors in these markets have one point of contact.

Meet Edgar

Recently the Marketing department made a change to the way we post to our social media profiles.

Previously, tweets and LinkedIn posts were manually created each time we had something to say. This was a time consuming process and it was difficult to recreate our core messages on a consistent basis.

Meet Edgar.

Edgar is a social media tool based on content libraries. The team can create posts in different categories and Edgar will pull from these libraries to keep posting content to social media consistently even when we aren’t in front of a computer. This means no matter the time zone, tweets about pathogen control, milling efficiency or general Anitox information will reach people around the world.

Did you know… the life span of a tweet is approximately 15 seconds! That’s how long it takes a post to move off the “front page” of the average person’s Twitter feed! Because of that you’ll see lots of repetition at various times of the day in the tweetosphere, not just from us, but from most major brands. That is also why most brands tweet up to 10 times a day (we keep it to 3 max).

If you follow us on Twitter (www.twitter.com/anitox) you have already seen the power of Edgar over the past few weeks. He powered our coverage during VIV and Midwest, sprinkling it with key benefits of Maxi-Mil and even showing off our 40th anniversary timeline (www.anitox.com/40years).

If you aren’t already following us on Twitter or LinkedIn, we invite you to join us and meet Edgar!

Giving Products Chinese (Mandarin) Names

$
0
0

When we choose a brand name, we work hard to select a name that has meaning in as many markets as possible, and we check to make sure that we haven’t picked something that’s rude or inappropriate in any language. We’ve been quite good at it over the years, and now Termin-8, Maxi-Mil and Finio are all well established brands in most of the big poultry-producing territories worldwide. But in some markets, the challenge is much trickier. China is a great example, as our Commercial Director for Asia Pacific Region Alan Doyle explains:

As Chinese is not based on the traditional ‘western’ alphabet, it is essential that products we wish to sell in China have a Chinese name, Chinese characters and Chinese pronunciation. Maxi-Mil HP is called 妙粒

The characters mean ‘WONDERFUL GRANULE’ and in Pinyin (the phonetic code tells everyone how to pronounce the characters) it is pronounced as miào lì .

When choosing a name for a product there are a number of options:

  1. Pick a Chinese name that ‘sounds’ like the ‘English’ brand name
  2. Pick a Chinese name that indicates what the product does e.g. kills bacteria in feed
  3. Pick a Chinese name that does both of the above
  4. Pick a name that simply sounds/looks good but has no connection to the ‘English’ name’s pronunciation or what it does.

Pitfalls are numerous as many Chinese characters have multiple meanings and when combined with other characters can mean something completely different again!

A good example is the official Chinese name given to President Trump: Te Lang Pu. The characters can mean both ‘EXTRAORDINARY, BRIGHT AND POPULAR’ but the same characters can also mean ‘UNUSUAL, LOUD AND COMMON’.

Recently, we had to find a name for Finio as we’ve started registering it in China. Ably assisted and guided by Bonnie Bai (our resident Beijing team member) we decided to follow option 1 and chose the name  which literally means ‘BIG, CLEVER/WONDERFUL’ and is pronounced as fěi miào. In Chinese characters it is 斐妙

Having a resident expert is always important; had we followed option 2, we could have inadvertently ended up with a product called ‘womaniser’ and ‘serial killer’!   Thank you Bonnie, for helping us avoid those pitfalls.

So, in China, Finio will be  斐妙 ( fěi miào ). As soon as we have a registration, we’ll be out there in the market with Finio and look forward to reporting back on sales.

Lawrenceville Gets New Drumming Station

$

Anitox is pleased to report the installation of a new drumming station at the Lawrenceville plant. The previous drumming station had been in operation for many, many years and unfortunately the controls were outdated and no longer available to purchase. The effect was a slower running station in that all drums and IBC’s had to be filled in manual mode.

The new drumming station was installed during the week of 03-13-17 through 03-17-17. The new station is PLC driven with recipe configurations, a cleanout station, and smart system that tracks and adjust filling volumes based upon pre – determined spec limits. The system is designed to read fill volumes and displays visual indicators and stop if volume has exceeded or not met the specifications. The operator now has the ability to select which product they will be running, the associated pump needed and simply hit start and the station will fill in automatic mode through fast fill and dribble mode.

During this install the Lawrenceville plant built up inventory in all tanks and IBC’s of finished product and the effect was that no order was missed or delayed during this time frame.

This project was a great collaboration of external contractors and of Anitox employees as they assisted in the removal of the old station and working each day with the crew  setting up the new station.

On the Learning Ladder (Part One)

During February’s global Town Hall meeting, Rick Phillips highlighted Anitox’s commitment to personal development and learning, and encouraged us all to take ownership of our progression and speak with our line managers about Anitox support. In the first of a series of articles on team members who’ve done just that, The Lens Online asked Will Rogers, Marketing Executive for EMEA, about his experience of Anitox-supported professional development:

Q:   Which course have you studied?

A: I’m studying for a Level 6 Diploma in Professional Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM).

Q:  What made you decide to do a professional qualification?

A: When I joined Anitox in June 2016, I was looking to further develop my marketing skills and knowledge, and a CIM qualification seemed like the perfect way to do just that. Until starting my CIM course, much of my marketing experience had been on-the-job or self-taught. I was keen to learn more about marketing theory and how to apply it to build on my hands-on experience.

Q: How did you go about getting Anitox’s support for your studies? What did Antiox do to support you?

A: Right from the word go, Ruth was keen for me to advance my knowledge and together we agreed on a course that would suit me. Anitox sponsors the course financially and allows me some time away from the office for lectures, exams, and assignments.

Q:  What difference has the course made to your work for Anitox, and to your longer-term career opportunities?

A: There’s always a lot going on behind the scenes in the marketing department, whether it’s placing adverts, liaising with the media, writing for the Lens, or planning exhibitions and mailing campaigns. Though I haven’t finished my qualification yet, the two modules I’ve done so far have helped me segment and apply theory my work, so I’m working more efficiently and understand more about what impact marketing can have on the industry. A formal marketing qualification certainly boosts my future career prospects, and will open up many opportunities in future, either inside Anitox as we grow or further afield.

Q:  What’s your advice to other colleagues thinking about professional development?

A: I’d definitely recommend it. The course takes up one evening per week, and is definitely manageable around work for me, though it gets a little tougher around exam/assignment time. If you’re interested in further learning, I’d say do a bit of research about what course might work for you and your job, then speak to your line manager about it.

In Memory

It is with sadness that Anitox marks the passing of Charles Martin, former State Representative for Buford, Georgia, present at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Anitox headquarters and production facility in Lawrenceville, Georgia, USA in June 1980.

Continued Association

Mr. Martin’s association with Anitox extended far beyond his ceremonial duties.  His daughter Candye (Martin) Dailey remains one of the company’s longest serving team members.  Remembering her father’s association with Anitox, Mrs. Dailey said:  “My father touched the lives of everyone here, by setting the stage for our business to grow in Buford.”

Go MAD

“He always challenged me to make a difference,” Mrs. Dailey recently commented. “I’m grateful, therefore, that so many of my colleagues are taking up the challenge to ‘Go Mad!’ in his memory this week.  Go MAD! means GOMake A Difference! Make a difference with your spouse, child, coworker, neighbor, friend, the person in line next to you at the airport! Encourage, inspire, buy a cup of coffee, smile when your patience is wearing thin, let someone go ahead of you at the grocery store. Your little act of kindness can be just the thing that Makes A Difference in someone’s day.”

“Our thoughts are with Candye and her family,” added Anitox President and CEO, Dr. Rick Phillips.  “Mr. Martin played a small part in our history that day in June 1980.  Since then his family have played an important role in helping Anitox grow and serve the local and wider agricultural community.”

Anitox to Host Live Webinar on Poultry Performance through Better Milling

$

Anitox, the global leader in milling efficiency and pathogen control, announced today that it will host a live, complimentary webinar entitled, “Poultry Performance through Better Milling”, on Thursday, May 16.. The webinar will offer expert advice from Dr Joseph Moritz, Professor at West Virginia University, USA who will share insight into feed manufacturing effects on both physical form and nutrient availability, and the consequential impact on growth performance of modern broiler genotypes.

The webinar will run in three regional sessions convenient for local audiences:

  • EMEA session: Thursday 16th June at 2pm-3pm BST (London)
  • America session: Thursday 16th June at 2pm-3pm EST (Atlanta)
  • Asia session: Friday 17th June at 9am-10am ICT (Bangkok)

“Pellet quality has economic importance as long as nutrition is not compromised,” explains Dr Moritz. “Unfortunately, little progress has been made towards convincing the meat bird industry that feeding high quality pellets has justifiable advantages for bird performance and overall economics. This lack of progress may be attributed to conflicting results in commercial practice and past literature. In this webinar we will explore how throughput improvements and moisture management can be achieved by adjusting manufacturing techniques with little or no change to nutrient availability.”

Specifically, this one hour informative webinar will cover:

  • Nutrient availability effect on bird performance with standardized feed form
  • Feed form effects on bird performance with standardized nutrient availability
  • Effects of pellet quality on ingredient and nutrient segregation

The event will be recorded and available upon request for those unable to attend.
