MalaysiaAfter spending a few days in the Kuala Lumpur office last week to be trained by Alan and the AP team on the Anitox pathogen control program, our new Sales Manager for the Philippines, Ricardo Ubal has already been successful in securing his first new business. Ric’s first order of Termin-8 powder came from a layer and swine producer with product consumption of 2 tonnes/month. In his first few weeks he has also met with our local agent, Dr Edgar Domingo, Southern Agrovet, to discuss the market development plan and follow-up on their order which didn’t move for a long time. As a result, Southern Agrovet will is ordering 9 tons of Termin-8 for, existing client, Erwin See’s inventory. Well done and congratulations to Ricardo. AP 1 AP 2Eric, Rika and Daru successfully conducted a Maxi-Mil refresher training program at CPI Semarang this week. This training gives the team a better understanding how Maxi-Mil S helps in improving milling efficiencies. Eric presented the concept of the Hydration principle and 1.0% (5:95), 0.5% (10:90) and 0.3% (17:83) MM solution options which will give CPI Semarang a few choices to use MMS in different seasons and feed moisture levels. In addition, shrink and factors affecting mold challenges in the field were shared and this will help them to improve feed quality and shrink reduction. The plant is currently using approximately 10MT of MMS per month.

New Finio Demo Kit Unveiled at EMEA Meeting

Full Kit

Anitox EMEA gathered this week to learn more about the future of Finio. EMEA Commercial Director John Thornton led the meeting and talked us through the history of Finio, covering everything we’ve achieved so far, then laid out a plan for the future. Recent research carried out with Cargill and GLW was summarised and attendees learned more about the improvements made to the use of Finio in the last few months, including:

  • The product itself
  • The application of the product
  • Sampling of feed for analysis
  • Packaging of the samples
  • Preparation of the samples in advance of been given to the lab

Customer research carried out by Carol Willey highlighted some interesting points about customers understanding of Finio.  From this research we understand that more education is needed to confirm to customers what Finio is, how it works, and what they can expect from Finio.  The recent technical meeting in Spain is a great example of how we can educate our clients and prospective clients.

Furthermore, the new Finio Demo Kit, put together by Kurt Richardson (Chief Science Officer), Nicole Holcolme (R&D Manager), and Laura Holmes (Product Marketing Manager), is a very powerful tool for our sales teams to use in the field with their customers.  The kit includes a high-powered grinder, scales, sealable Whirl-Pak bags, glass vials, and syringes, and enables us to take and prepare samples in front of mill managers and provide accurate lab results using the customers own feed. Along with the equipment comes a leaflet explaining how the samples are to be taken and processed.

Bringing all of these improvements together, we expect to see more consistent results from Finio.

LV AuditorsWhile the world’s eyes are on Rio, the Lawrenceville office celebrated with their monthly recognition lunch this week. With delicious Italian food, the group broke up into separate teams to answer Olympic questions based on their chosen M&M candy color.

Afterwards, Angene Esson presented some initial information regarding our upcoming benefits enrollment period and a special health and wellness focus month.

Finally, in absentia, David Palmer passed the Shining Star award to the new internal audit team, headed by Nathan Freeman in recognition of this team of volunteers’ enthusiasm for their new charge during this year’s training session. Nathan brought in an expert from Georgia Tech University to educate the group on processes, procedures and best practices for continuous improvement within Anitox. We are excited to see where this team takes us!

Roger Mann: Making Our Move

IMAG1431What a team!   Back in July 2015 at the EMEA Town Hall meeting I announced to everyone the we would need to move from Earls Barton (a) because the lease runs out in Jan 2017 and (b) because we have out-grown it and we would be looking for somewhere local to Earls Barton.  When Adrian Clipston and I saw the Regent Park office for the first time in February of this year, we knew immediately that it had potential.  Today, less than six months after our first visit, we’re in and it is business as usual.   I’d like to add my compliments to the team that pulled it off with such calm efficiency.

The hunt began in earnest in late January and by mid-February we’d found Regent Park – just 4 miles and a 7 minute drive from the old Anitox House, and with scope to accommodate our offices and engineering.   By mid-April I had negotiated the final terms with our new landlord and the solicitors were engaged, and we set our target move date – August 8th – in May.    By mid-May we had enlisted the services of Ian Walker to manage the move for us, and what an amazing job he’s done.   Working closely with Adrian, John Thornton and Richard York, he’s overseen the changes to office layout and infrastructure needed, and sourced and managed the contractors needed to get us installed.   His patience and attention to detail have kept everything on track; it’s nothing short of miraculous that we met our target removals date.  And today Will Rogers and his graphics team are putting the finishing touches to our signage.   The final phase is now well underway; our engineers will relocate their workshop to Regent Park shortly, completing the move.

My personal thanks go to Maria and Ian Walker, Adrian and Josie Clipston, John Bevan, Mel Bowler and Sara Anderson for putting in the extra shifts needed to ensure that, on Monday, the team arrived to a fully-operational office.   And credit to the entire team for the clinical approach that’s been taken to de-cluttering, making sure that we’ve relocated with all the essentials and none of the other baggage one accumulates over time.

We have a 10-year lease at Regent Park, and I am in no doubt that it will be an excellent Anitox EMEA base during that period and beyond.  We have room to grow, facilities that reflect our status and ambitions, and a fantastic team of people whose companionship and work ethic makes being at Regent Park a pleasure.  Well done team, and thank you.

Roger

AP China Meeting 3After successfully conducting the site survey for CP China Phase I project, Eric Chew, Daru Makarta and Boh continued their Journey in China over the past 7 days to meet the area VP feed tech and production team for 7 selected plants to brief the preparation of the engineering work and find out their feed quality data. Eric shared with the area Feed Tech team the outcomes of water activity level in their feeds and raw materials and explained there is no straight relationship between feed moisture and water activity. The installation discussion was handled by Daru & Boh with Production Team to ensure all the requirements for the MMGF installation understood by plant manager and local contractor.

The next step is signing of the CSA by the heads of feed tech. Eric is preparing for a presentation of ‘targets’ to the four regional heads of production, to be conducted once the application systems are either being or have been installed.

Building Business in Peru

Gino 2by Dr. Gino Lorenzoni
Global Technical Director and Commercial Director – Latin America

Recently I traveled to Peru to conduct two training sessions for the Quimtia team and meet with several customers. The training included theoretical and hands on modules (posting sessions) to position Termin-8 as a pathogen solution for enteritis control. A full review of product positioning and differentiation was carried out with them.

Quimtia also coordinated field and office visits with relevant customers. Among some of the most important:

  • Avinka to talk about T8 in breeders and MM (their feed mill is at full capacity),
  • Molinos del Marquez aiming to replace a competitor in breeders and start proving the product in broiler performance (farm visit),
  • Rio Azul to talk about T8 in broilers (farm visit)
  • Pluma Blanca, a current user of Termin-8 liquid in broilers (farm visit). At Pluma Blanca we received excellent comments from the feed mill manager. After a few days of using the product he noted less mould formation and accumulation in some of the surfaces of the feed mill. Evaluation of intestinal health was conducted and the birds are looking great.

One key learning from this trip was that chicken prices are very low and covers only around 70% of the cost of producing and commercializing a chicken. They are expecting the market will get better, however in the meantime they are doing all they can to reduce feed price. One of the things they do is include larger proportions of by products (which can be heavily contaminated) which are cheaper than standard ingredients. However, to compensate for the intestinal challenge they are spending large amounts of money in growth promoters. The normal inclusion rate in several companies is three times the maximum recommended dose, raising the price of a ton of feed $12 (vs no use of antibiotics). One of the options we discussed is to bring the growth promoter closer to label dose and secure feed quality with a smaller investment in T8.

Today our competitors are dominating the market. Low prices and high presence have limited our business. Building closer relationships through activities like the training of the Quimtia team will bring us closer to start materializing this very important market.

Rick Phillips: AAAP Update

590 edited cropped smIn early August I attended the 2016 American Association of Avian Pathologists (AAAP) meeting in San Antonio, Texas, USA, which is an international gathering of poultry Veterinarians to receive continuing education and network with others in the industry. Anitox was also a sponsor of the meeting, which gave us some great exposure to the industry as a whole and those who care for the millions of layers, broilers and turkeys. Overall there was a strong influence of the antibiotic free impact, especially with the new Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) being implemented January 2017 which will place additional restrictions on the use of antibiotics from a government regulatory level. How this impacts intestinal health and specifically coccidiosis and bacterial challenges in birds was a hot topic of discussion.

Anitox was represented by two speakers at this year’s event. Dr. Haroldo Toro (Auburn University) presented his recent research on inactivation of avian influenza virus in chicken feed. He showed that Termin-8 and Finio are both highly effective against the virus in feed, working quickly and also showing 7-day residual protection. He told the packed crowd that when it is a risk factor, there are solutions for feed.

Our own Dr. Kurt Richardson also presented “Impact of Controlling Bacteria in Feed on Broiler Performance during a Clostridial Challenge.” He showed the negative effects of Clostridia on bird performance and how Termin-8 and Finio can reduce that effect.

Overall it was another successful industry meeting for Anitox, and we were proud to again be a gold level sponsor.

Engineering Takes On Central America

LATAM Engineering 6Earlier this year Salvador Alejo and I conducted two days of training for customers and our distributor, Disatyr, in Honduras.

The Americas Engineering group has been working hard to change our relationship with our customers.  In the past Anitox said “Please do not touch our equipment, if you have an issue give us a call and we will come and fix it.”  That sounds good in the sales call but does not work well in the real world.  The Americas Engineering group has been working very hard to change this mentality and grow our local relationships with our customers.  We have had great results and on various emergency calls where we have been able to work through the issue over the phone or have the customer replace a part for us, saving us thousands of dollars in travel costs.

Our Central American customers have still been working with the old mindset, so we decided to conduct a two day product and equipment training with them.  We had managers and maintenance personnel from Cargill, Granel, El Cortijo, Noraves, and Pronorsa.  The group was open to the idea of working with us when there is a problem in the future so that we can have their equipment up and running in the least amount of time possible.  We made the point that we are in this together and the relationship benefits both Anitox and our customer.
