During the month of July, Anitox conducted a MMS demo in one on our largest Central America customers. SARAM is the largest commercial feed producer in El Salvador and has advocated MMS to other potential customers as well.
This company has been a loyal MMS customer for more than 5 years. They initially started using MMS for pelleted feed, and later on expanded its use to treat whole corn and molasses. Their latest interest was expanding the use of MMS into pet foods.
After Marcos Vinicius performed some moisture sensor adjustments to our MM application system, we started our demo. The treatment consisted of 1 kg of MMS per ton of pet food. The results were very promising, obtaining more than 1% of moisture increase in the “dog kibbles”. This was achieved without passing the 0.60 of water activity set a the maximum limit. Thanks to our portable water activity meter, we were able demonstrate the customer that using the total moisture percent as their only main quality parameter was not correct and that using the water activity readings would provide them a better mean for quality control. Monitoring the water activity will give them the opportunity to increase the moisture retention in the final product and at the same time increase their revenue with the risk of shortening the product shelf life.
At the end of the results presentation, SARAM decided to purchase a water activity meter and initiate the use of MMS in all their pet food products.
Also, as part of our added value service, I gave a presentation to SARAM feed mill employees regarding “Factors that Impact Pellet Quality.”
